I’m a huge fan of decluttering. We did a big clean out before Christmas to make room for new toys. Anything broken beyond repair went out and unused toys went to charity. This guest post is full of great tips for decluttering AND there’s a giveaway at the end! Happy decluttering. Bec xx
Decluttering is not only a great way to get organised and free up space in your home, it can also have a big impact on your state of mind. Enter the New Year clutter free and learn how to maximise your space with the following tips from Craig Jones, the Decluttering Expert and CEO of eco-friendly cleaning company White Magic.
Divide and conquer
To avoid becoming overwhelmed, plan ahead and divide your home into small manageable sections and work progressively. Options include working through each room, or by picking key tasks like sorting through your wardrobe, bathroom cabinets and filing, etc.
By sitting down and making a list with a set timeframe, not only does it make the process more manageable, it gives you a clear picture of what needs to be done and an easy way to keep track of what sections have been sorted.
Invest in Storage Solutions
Make the most of your space by investing in innovative storage solutions, like the i-hook range from White Magic.
The versatile collection features great space saving products like the i-hook Bathroom Station (RRP $27.95) and i-hook Bathroom Corner Shelf (RRP $49.95) which transform unused space in your bathroom into functional storage areas.
The vast variety of products in the i-hook range start at only RRP $14.95 and are the answer to many household storage dilemmas. For further information on the i-hook collection and stockist information visit the White Magic website.
Keep Strict Categories
Banish the maybe pile and only classify items as either keep, donate or toss. Don’t dwell too long on one thing as often your first gut instinct is the right one. Think realistically about how often you will use something and be honest with yourself about how much you have used it in the past 12 months. Need an extra nudge to get rid of something? Consider the latest survey and study by researchers Dunn, Akin, and Norton that found that donating to charity effects chemical changes in the brain that lead to feelings of happiness.
The average office worker uses approximately 10,000 sheets of paper a year, much of which gets haphazardly filed or stacked in a corner and forgotten about. Do your part for the environment and reduce the amount of paper floating around your home and office by switching from paper to digital where you can. Most banks and credit card company’s now offer a complimentary digital option for receiving your bills and statements making it easier to keep this information organised and easy to find. Another great paperless alternative is to download your favourite magazines and books on your tablet or kindle, another bonus is that they are often cheaper to purchase digitally and save you a trip to the newsagent/bookstore.
Make it a Habit
The best way to avoid drowning in clutter by the time next year rolls around is to take time at regular intervals to do a quick sweep around the house and office. Plan it out and mark it down in your diary for the year and treat it like any other regular cleaning chore. Committing to frequent, mini decluttering sessions ensures that things don’t spiral out of control and prevents you from having to do a massive clear out down the track.
